Green Space

Goal: To create a multi-tasked open space that supports both community and ecological uses.

Why is Green Space important?

  • Careful consideration of green space in and around the city can make the community ecologically sustainable and enhance recreation opportunities.
  • Green spaces provide places to play, exercise and relax, and improve the quality of life for everyone.

Where are we now?
Dawson Creek has many green spaces within city limits:

  • Kin Park walking/biking trail system links the Multi-Plex on the southeast edge of the city with Radar Lake and Pioneer Village on the northwest and follows Kin Park and the creek through town,
  • The Multi-Plex Sports Fields include soccer pitches and baseball diamonds. There are soccer fields and diamonds at several city schools,
  • The Dave Leoppky Community Forest and Chamberlain Nature Park
  • Neighbourhood parks - Canalta, Kin, Kitchen, Crescent, Grandview, Memorial, McKinnon, Chamberlain, Parkhill, NAR, Tremblay and Rotary.

How are we doing?
The City intends to increase the overall green space and recreational opportunities. The community's sustainability plan will also outline a series of indicators so that progress toward sustainability can be measured over time. It is expected that the indicators will be available by the end of 2008.

What are we doing to improve?

Parks and Recreation Master Plan
Parks and Recreation Master Plan (531 KB)
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan focuses on the development of a range of park spaces and recreation needs throughout the community. When the plan is next reviewed, emphasis will be placed on the ecological functions of Dawson Creek's green spaces.

Official Community Plan (OCP)
Official Community Plan Bylaw No.3550 (3,769 KB)
The OCP includes a development permit area for natural areas within the City, requiring special consideration for the development of these areas.

Chamberlain Nature Heritage Park
Chamberlain Park is a 60 acre parcel of natural forest on the west edge of the city that has been protected as an urban natural retreat.
