Community
Planning
Goal: To create a compact, complete and dense community.
Why is this important?
- The layout of a community is
one of the greatest contributors to sustainability.
- The most sustainable
communities are compact - buildings and services are close together
- and complete - and all the main services are within close range.
- Compact
and complete communities provide opportunities for healthy activities,
such as walking or biking, make transit systems more viable, offer
more opportunities for renewable energy systems and minimize infrastructure
costs.
Where are we now?
The way the community is currently laid out offers some good opportunities
to increase sustainability. The downtown core offers a variety of services
and is pedestrian-oriented. Further residential development in this
area could create a more complete community.
How are we doing?
The community's sustainability plan will also outline a series of indicators
so that progress toward sustainability can be measured over time. It
is expected that the indicators will be available by the end of 2008.1
What are we doing to improve?
Land Use Charrette
Dawson Creek engaged in a public land use planning charrette process
to plan the development of 240-acres at the north end of the city between
8th and 17th streets. This leading edge approach was undertaken to ensure
the land is developed in a sustainable way that meets the needs of the
community in the future.
