Governance
Goal: To develop governance and citizen engagement and
education processes to ensure an equitable and progressive society.
Why is governance important?
- Engaged, active citizens create the community
of the future.
- By participating, citizens ensure the decisions made
by Dawson Creek's municipal government reflect their needs and desires.
- Individuals
must have a voice in decision-making, along with the wide range
of agencies and organizations with interests in the community.
Where are we now?
Dawson Creek continues to encourage public participation in decision-making
processes, using the annual plan/report, the budget and other financials,
development permits, and the Official Community Plan.
Approaches vary but tools include: public hearings, neighborhood notifications,
Council Advisory Committees, user group meetings and targeted surveys,
depending on the issue, as well as Citizen Surveys and Service Audits.
How are we doing?
The community's sustainability plan will also outline a series of indicators
so that progress toward sustainability can be measured over time. It
is expected that the indicators will be available by the end of 2008.
What are we doing to improve?
Excellence Program
Dawson Creek is currently using criteria and standards established by
The National Quality Institute (NQI), an independent, not for profit,
leading Canada in workplace excellence, to raise the quality of its service
to community members and quality of experience of city employees. The
city aims to improve the standard of service that city staff provide
to the citizens.
