Take part in the Turn it Off Challenge in the City of Dawson
Creek!
Every day, millions of lights, electronic gadgets and electric
appliances are left on in office buildings and public facilities,
consuming energy unnecessarily. As conservation will play a key
role in helping us meet our future energy needs, a large shift
in awareness and action will need to occur throughout the province.
BC Hydro is sponsoring the Turn
It Off Challenge , encouraging
municipalities and the public to turn off and unplug all unnecessary
fixtures, appliances, and office equipment for 3 months.
The goal is to make us aware of our tendency to take
energy supply for granted. Through newspaper and television ads,
British Columbians will be encouraged to conserve energy and make
individual changes to reduce their impact on the environment.
This will also help everyone strengthen their energy-saving habits,
like turning out lights when leaving a room or a building.

10 Easy ways you can participate in Turn it Off!
- LIGHTING: Replace your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent
light bulbs. Turn off lights when you leave the room.
- APPLIANCES: Turn off all unnecessary appliances, high tech devices and
gadgets like computers, printers, photocopiers, and lamps.
- HEAT: Only heat the rooms you need by closing vents and doors
of unused rooms. Wear clothing for the season and turn down
the air conditioning in the summer months.
- SAVE WATER: Take five-minute showers instead of baths and use cold water
for laundry. Water heating uses electricity.
- TRANSPORTATION: Carpool, use transit or use your bike.
- CAR IDLING: If you're vehicle is parked for 10 seconds or longer,
turn off the engine.
- COMPUTER MONITOR: Adjust settings
so that your monitor turns off after 10 minutes instead of
20. Do the same with other office equipment. Better yet,
turn off all your office equipment during longer periods of
non-use.
- ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Unplug your charger when
you are not using it, or plug everything on a power bar to
easily turn off all devices at once.
- COOKING: Keep
the lids on pots to prevent heat from escaping or use a
microwave oven.
- HOME APPLIANCES: Electric dryers are the
second biggest energy user in the home. Avoid the dryer by
air-drying clothes.
