PROJECT:
Since 2005, the City of Dawson Creek has been progressing towards
a shared community vision for a sustainable future. This project,
within the larger Dawson Creek Sustainability Planning Process,
seeks to engage a wide range of community members in the creation
of a conceptual site plan for Dawson Creek’s first sustainable
community. It is anticipated this community driven plan and
the eventual development of this site, will be used as a guide
for broader, future community planning and development across
the whole City.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Have you noticed
housing prices lately?
What about gas prices?
Not only is the world changing, so is Dawson Creek. While a
number of new economic ventures in the region contribute to the
changes we see, a greater force has arrived. Many are realizing
that housing and gas prices are not just a boom, but a taste
of the future norm.
The City of Dawson Creek, although small, is smart. It has already
made the choice to plan for this future and not get left behind.
A sustainable agenda means having a choice in how the future
will look. It means ensuring there is an affordable range of
housing choices for all incomes so that families who are just
starting out or are looking to retire don’t have to leave
the community; it means reducing waste and attaining efficient
infrastructure that keeps energy costs down for everyone; it
means keeping jobs and people in the community and designing
communities that lessen our need to drive everywhere and spend
of fortune on gas. Most importantly, it means we ensure that
we are a healthy and beautiful place to live! Like anything,
from personal banking or health - taking action now,
will secure your future.
This new community could capture more of its share in regional
growth and the City soon be known across Canada, especially in
Northern BC/Alberta as being the best and the most sustainable
place to live!

Thank you for your help in planning a new sustainable neighbourhood
for Dawson Creek!
On May 23rd, we held a public ideas forum looking for input
on:
- what type of housing should be there and for who?
- what programs, parks and new amenities are needed?
- what should it look and feel like?
- what ‘sustainable’ means to you?
This was the first public event and opportunity to have a
voice at an early stage of planning and design. Ideas shared
at the meeting will be used to develop the vision and objectives
for the site and guided us in preparing for the land use planning
design charrette held June 11th - 14th (where a working site
plan was generated). Thank you for joining the team and helping
make this project the best it can be!
