How to Build a Composter

Build a Wooden Pallet Compost Bin

This inexpensive bin is made from free wooden pallets and diverts pallets from the landfill.
This design includes a removable front to make it easy to turn the compost.

Materials

  • Four wooden pallets
  • 2 wood screws or bailing wire
  • Four bolt latches

How to Build a Pallet Bin

Screw or wire three pallets together.

Attach bolt latches to the front edge of the bin and the fourth pallet to make a removable door.

Variations

A two-bin system uses just 6 pallets and makes composting easier. Turn the full bin into the empty one and back again.

For large quantities of compostable material (remember you want each pile to be about 1 cubic metre in size), use 10 pallets to build a three-bin system. Start a pile in the first bin, turn it into the second and then the third. You can now start another pile in the first bin.

For best results, turn compost every two weeks or so.
