*AUGUST 19 - IMPORTANT NOTICE " STAGE 4 - Water Conservation Measures" in effect for Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe

Effective Thursday, August 19th, and until further notice, the City of Dawson Creek and the Village of Pouce Coupe are under Stage 4 water conservation measures.

During this time you MUST NOT:

  • Water lawns, flower or vegetable gardens, decorative planters, shrubs, trees, artificial turf or outdoor tracks;

  • Fill or re-fill ponds, swimming pools, fountains, and hot tubs;

  • Haul bulk water for non potable use;

  • Wash sidewalks, driveways or any other outdoor surface.

Washing of boats, RV’s or other motor vehicles is only permitted to ensure safe operation of the vehicle and/or visibility of licence plates and can only be done with a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off device.

Permits to water newly seeded or turfed areas are no longer available and any previously issued permits are no longer valid.

Water levels in the Kiskatinaw River, the City’s sole water source are at historical lows and these conservation measures are required to conserve the water that is available to the municipality.

*AUGUST 12 - "STAGE 3 - Water Conservation Measures" in effect for Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe

Effective Thursday, August 12th, and until further notice, the City of Dawson Creek and the Village of Pouce Coupe are under Stage 3 water conservation measures.

During this time lawn watering is prohibited. Washing of boats, RV’s or other outdoor watering is permitted only to ensure safe operation of the vehicle and/or visibility of licence plates. Filling or re-filling of ponds, swimming pools, fountains, and hot tubs is prohibited. All other watering must be carried out by hand using a hose equipped with an automatic shut off device.

Permits to water newly seeded or turfed areas are no longer available and any previously issued permits are no longer valid.

*AUGUST 6 - "STAGE 2 - Water Conservation Measures" in effect for Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe

Effective Friday, August 6th, and until further notice, the City of Dawson Creek and the Village of Pouce Coupe are under Stage 2 water conservation measures.

During this time lawn watering has been decreased to once per week and lawns may only be watered between 4 am and 9 am and 7 pm and 10 pm on Wednesdays for even numbered addresses and Thursdays for odd numbered addresses. Permits to water newly seeded or turfed areas can be purchased from the Engineering Department during regular City Hall office hours.

The public is also asked to refrain from washing vehicles and any other non-essential use of water during this time including operation of ornamental fountains and washing of outdoor surfaces.

The City of Dawson Creek is applying a unique "Age-Friendly" lens to the development of the Zoning Bylaw, and the purpose of the workshop was to identify key issues and opportunities for seniors with respect to accessibility, aging in place, walkability, and related issues. *Dawson Creek wins NCLGA - Measuring Up the North "Award of Excellence" - Population over 5000

Jim Rowland, member of the Dawson Creek's Measuring Up the North Committee nominated the City of Dawson Creek for their outstanding service to the community. Join us for "AGE-FRIENDLY DAWSON CREEK" Workshop The City of Dawson Creek is applying a unique "Age-Friendly" lens to the development of the Zoning Bylaw, and the purpose of the workshop is to identify key issues and opportunities for seniors with respect to accessibility, aging in place, walkability, and related issues. *JUNE 28th - Join us for "ZONING BYLAW " Workshop (A Consultation for Users) The City of Dawson Creek is undertaking a review and update of its Zoning Bylaw, which regulates: how land is used, permitted housing types, parking, aspects of buildings such as heights and how they are situated on sites, and other development considerations. The purpose of this workshop is to identify key issues and opportunities from the perspective of those who use it most. Both barriers and solutions will be explored in this two hour workshop. Many families took advantage of the Solar event enjoying the popcorn and music, while other residences participated in the "Solar Hot Water Heating System" tour at City Hall. The City of Dawson Creek wishes to announce that Emanuel Machado, the City’s Director of Corporate Planning and Sustainable Development, is leaving his position effective December 19, 2009. Mr. Machado has accepted employment with the District of Sechelt, B.C.

Mr. Machado has been instrumental in the City’s award winning sustainability and community planning initiatives. Mr. Machado is acknowledged as a national leader in integrated community energy planning and has represented the City of Dawson Creek in an exemplary fashion on many environment related files.

Our thanks go out to Mr. Machado for everything he has done for the City of Dawson Creek and for the greater community. The City of Dawson Creek wishes Emanuel and his family all of the best in their new opportunity.

October 5, 2009 - ENERGETIC OLYMPICS - Dawson Creek takes Silver! The City was presented with a cheque in the amount of $350 to go towards its 2010 Earth Day celebration. Working together with our residents was the key to our success! .Michael Simpson, Executive Director of ONE SKY (Canadian Institute of Sustainable Living) presented a cheque to City Council at the October 5, 2009 meeting.

Dawson Creek is Planning for People!

The City of Dawson Creek has undergone a review of its Official Community Plan (OCP), which is a legal document that guides land use and development in the community, including: housing, buildings, infrastructure, energy, transportation, environmental protection and open space, food system, health and safety, economic development, inter-jurisdictional planning, community design, and arts, culture and heritage.

A new draft of the OCP has been crafted to deliver on the community’s vision and goals for a sustainable Dawson Creek, which were developed as part of the larger “Planning for People” initiative. Early public input, as well as a Public Open House held in June 2009, was incorporated into the new draft of the OCP. Stakeholder organizations and other partners currently reviewed and commented, a second Public Open House was held during the week of October 24 - Nov 27 (boards on display at City wide locations).
